Board of Selectmen Meeting, September 3, 2024
Community Center Gym Floor
The Town’s Facility Maintenance Manager, Alan Trant, was unable to attend, but he provided some summary information and arranged for Ryan Marsh, the owner of Wilder Flooring, to attend to discuss the situation with the board.
The gym floor will be tested for asbestos this week. The samples will need to be sent off to a lab. Lab turnaround time is unknown. Marsh doubts that the tiles contain asbestos, as the tiles are a different size from the ones that more commonly contain asbestos. However, the adhesive used may contain asbestos.
It may be possible to leave the old flooring in place; however, this risks future delamination. It is better to remove the old flooring, but if it contains asbestos, the vendor is not equipped to remove it.
While the Town’s budget does not allow for a flooring that has been certified for sports use, the planking selected is designed for heavy traffic and has been successfully used in high-traffic areas such as airport terminals.
Only the gym and its closet will be refloored, not the hallway leading to the gym.
